How to Prevent Falls?

Did you know that 80% of older women preferred death to a bad fall? Yet as we age falls are more common and the consequences can be more devasting. So what can we do to prevent falls and their dire consequences?

Beside adequate nutrition for strong muscles and bones there are environmental and physical interventions that can easily be done.

Environmental suggestions

1. Get rid of clutter!

2. Make sure your rugs don’t slip or have edges that can cause trips.

3. Have adequate lighting.

4. In the night have motion activated light come on as soon as you get out of bed.

5. Color contrast steps.

6. Keep cords out of any walking path.

 

Physical suggestions

1. See a physical therapist for a full body musculoskeletal assessment.

2. Once you know where you are weak work on a challenging exercise program to improve your strength.
